Plain-English Definition
No advice means the worker or system may provide information, education, or process guidance, but must not recommend what the client should buy, sell, hold, or do unless authorized.
Why It Matters
It protects clients from receiving recommendations from the wrong role and protects the firm from accidental advice, undocumented recommendations, or unapproved guidance.
Mechanics
Separate education from recommendation. Facts, definitions, and process steps may be allowed. Client-specific direction, product selection, or action instructions may cross into advice.
Applied Example
A client asks whether they should sell a position. A permitted response may explain how selling works or route them to an advisor, but it should not tell them to sell.
Practice Frame
Stay within role, clarify boundaries, provide general information when allowed, and route advice requests to the correct person or process.
Common Mistakes
Compliance Frame
Ask: Am I explaining information or directing the client’s decision?
Review Habit
Boundary language should be clear before the client relies on the response.
